Children’s Ministry

Children’s Ministry

For over 175 years the children of BSUMC have had amazing opportunities to develop in their faith journey through participation in the dynamic children’s programs we offer. They are excited to discover engaging and meaningful activities that will shape, mold and guide them on their spiritual growth forward. Our Children’s Ministry is guided by our Family Faith Steps. Our Family Faith Steps are Baptism, Preschool Sunday School, Rotation Sunday School, 3rd Grade Bibles, and Confirmation. We believe each faith step builds on the previous, and each of the children’s programs are developed to support this philosophy.

The BSUMC Children’s Ministry exists to help children be eager to learn about God. We strive to teach children to be active in the church and giving in their homes, community, and world. We offer a space where the love of God is ever present and a place where everyone is allowed to love God and one another through worship and fellowship in a safe environment.

BSUMC is serious about security.Security

The Children’s Ministry’s primary focus is to ensure the safety of every child attending our church activities. Through our security system the church is able to identify and confirm the location of a child at any time, quickly alert members during an emergency, have knowledge of a child’s allergies or special needs, have confidence in matching children with guardians, and provide security badges to children, parents and visitors. This system exists for all children from infancy through fifth grade.

Sunday School

Children’s Sunday school classes start at 10:00 AM on Sunday mornings. We offer Preschool Sunday school for children ages 2 through K5, Rotation Sunday school for children in 1st through 4th grade, and Heroes of Faith Sunday school for all 5th graders. Our Sunday school ages are based on a child’s age as of September 1st.

Preschool Sunday School (ages 2 – K5) – At BSUMC your preschooler will grow in their faith by learning the Word of God through Bible story activities, crafts, and media. Our leaders use the “Deep Blue” curriculum, which is engaging and age appropriate. The curriculum is designed to go through the Bible over the course of 3 years.

Rotation Sunday School (1st – 4th Grade) – Rotation Sunday school is for all BSUMC children in 1st through 4th grade. This dynamic program uses the Deep Blue Rotation curriculum and offers your elementary age children the opportunity to learn central Bible stories and concepts through kid friendly media. Every month we introduce a new Bible story, and your child will enjoy a deeper understanding of each story by participating in a rotation of activities each week. Rotations include: art, science, mission, spiritual practices, Bible skills and games, cooking, Bible building blocks, and audiovisual.

Heroes of the Faith (5th Grade) – This Sunday school class is specifically designed for children in the 5th grade. Each week your 5th grader will be introduced to a different Biblical hero. And as they work their way through heroes of the Old and New Testament, they will discover more than just the hero’s story. They will open their Bibles each week as we dig into the story together, asking questions and discussing what this story means for them. This time together also includes singing, prayer, Scripture memory and a time of thanksgiving.

Kid’s Worship

Kids.Comm (K5 – 2nd grade) – Kids.comm (Christ on my mind) is a program for K5/6-2nd grade children and is offered during all Sunday morning worship services. Children in all four services are invited to Kids.Comm, which meets in Memorial Chapel. During this time they will experience their own church service, featuring Deep Blue Bible stories and Church Mouse teachings on the Christian year. An emphasis is placed on learning and understanding the various Christian seasons of the year, the elements of a worship service, and the importance of Methodist teachings. You make pick up your child from Kids.comm in the Memorial Chapel at the conclusion of the worship service.

Nursery (Infant – Age 4) – The BSUMC Nursery is for children between the ages of 8-weeks-old and 4-years-old and is available during all Sunday morning services, as well as during Sunday school hours for those under the age of 2. Our nursery is staffed with trained, paid workers, as well as parent volunteers. In addition to Sunday mornings, most church-wide activities, as well as many of our special programs, include nursery-age childcare

Nursery Breakdown (by age)

  • Infant Room (8 weeks old to walking) – Located in room LL04
  • Toddler & Walkers Room (Walking to 2 years-old) – Located in room LL05
  • Multi-Age-Room (3 & 4 year-olds) – Located in LL09

Sprouts-logoSprouts (4th and 5th graders) – This is a ministry offering for 4th and 5th graders who wish to participate in a covenant group on Sunday evenings from 5.15-7.15 PM, September through April. BSUMC believes that when we truly accept God’s grace and steadfast love into our lives, then a desire to respond to His love by loving others should follow. The Sprouts ministry was created as a result of this belief, and in a desire to further foster God’s love for others. In this Sprouts ministry every 4th and 5th grade participant will be challenged to grow as a Christian disciple in his or her daily practice of:

  • Acts of Kindness (helping others)
  • Acts of Justice (helping our world)
  • Acts of Devotion (relating to God)
  • Acts of Worship (praising God)

Unlike the Sunday school setting, Sprouts allows the children to practice their discipleship by going out into the community and helping those in need, just like Jesus did. Sprouts is a great way for your child to learn how to share God’s love with others, while at the same time spending time with kids their own age who are also growing in their faith. A few of the projects our Sprouts have participated in include: a poverty tour of Greenville, the Transformation Walk, Bags of Blessing, the CROP Hunger Walk, Epworth Children’s Home, SOS bags, and helping out in various Miracle Hill Ministries’ missions. Are you interested in knowing more about Sprouts, or perhaps you feel called to help within this ministry? Please email Rev. Gayle Quay, or call her at 864-371-6089.

Children’s Library – BSUMC is proud to offer an extensive child’s library, which is fully stocked with high quality and award winning Christian books and DVDs. Church members, and guests, are invited to check out books and DVDs. The library uses a computerized checkout system, and we ask that all materials be returned within a two-week period. The library is open on Sundays from 9:45 AM to 11:00 AM, Wednesdays from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, and during the week by appointment only. The children’s library is located directly outside of Drake Hall, across from the vending machines.

Newest Angel Program – The birth of a new baby is a blessing from God and the Newest Angel ministry at BSUMC is excited to celebrate this blessing with you! If you’re a new parent, please let us know by calling the church office (864-232-7341), as we want to praise God and welcome him or her into our extended church family. The Newest Angel ministry is always looking for volunteers to help us celebrate the birth of a child. Contact Gayle Quay if you would like additional information or if you are interested in volunteering with this ministry.
