Donald Trump's voice sounds really weird in rambling chat with Elon Musk (2024)

During last night’s chinwag between Elon Musk and Donald Trump, some people were less focused on what the ex-US president was saying – and more on how he said it.

The much-hyped online chat couldn’t have got off to a worse start, with tech issues frustrating the billionaire twosome.

For around 47 minutes, people hoping to listen to the streamed conversation were instead met with an error message featuring a monkey emoji.

And when the feed finally kicked off on social media site X – still known to most of the world as Twitter – those tuning in were treated to a few minutes of heavy breathing before anyone spoke.

Musk, who owns X as well as carmaker Tesla and spacecraft manufacturer SpaceX, began the two-hour blether with an apology for those who waited.

‘We unfortunately had a massive distributed denial-of-service attack against our servers and saturated all of our data lines. Hundreds of gigabits of data were saturated,’ he said, instantly plunging into techspeak.

But the bafflement only grew when Trump started to speak and people heard the new way he seemed to be pronouncing the letter S.

‘Trump has sounded like he has a strong lisp for the entire interview so far,’ wrote one X user.

Others speculated that the effect was due to a low-quality microphone or audio compression – though some thought the 78-year-old may simply have been wearing dentures.

Last night’s tech snafu is likely to have been an unwelcome reminder for Musk of the calamity that accompanied Florida governor Ron DeSantis’s announcement of his presidential run live on X.

At the event in May last year, the platform experienced about a half hour of technical issues before crashing.

It was ultimately deemed a bad look for DeSantis, who eventually dropped out of the race with Trump far ahead in the polls.

Beyond the disastrous start and Trump’s unexpected vocal affection, the event last night went largely as planned.

Musk was explicit from the start that he was not going to probe his preferred presidential candidate with ‘adverserial’ questions, and the pair would simply enjoy a friendly conversation.

The result was a broad ramble through the Republican’s many grievances, including the European Union and his Democrat opponent Kamala Harris’s approach to immigration.

It wasn’t all insults, though – at one point, Trump described a Time magazine cover featuring Harris where she ‘looks like the most beautiful actress ever to live’.

And Prime Minister Keir Starmer will be pleased that his approach to the recent UK riots did not come up as some had expected, following Musk’s many tweets on the subject.

Following the interview, Harris campaign spokesman Joseph Costello said: ‘Trump’s entire campaign is in service of people like Elon Musk and himself — self-obsessed rich guys who will sell out the middle class and who cannot run a livestream in the year 2024.’

Ahead of the chat with Musk, Trump started posting regularly on X again for the first time since his account was removed following the January 6 violence at the US Capitol in 2021.

Apart from a single post to promote his mugshot around a year ago, he has mostly stuck to his own Truth Social platform.

The three-time presidential candidate has been doing more unconventional interviews since Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign and Vice President Kamala Harris secured the Democratic nomination.

A week ago, he had a 90-minute interview with 23-year-old live streamer Adin Ross, who gifted him a Tesla Cybertruck, a Rolex watch and a Diet co*ke. It was viewed as aimed at appealing to a younger demographic of voters.

Trump told Ross regarding his viewership and the interview, ‘I hope you’re going to break your record by a lot.’
